New Jersey - Marc Vallée

Retramp Gallery, Berlin is proud to present a new exhibition by London-based documentary photographer Marc Vallée.

Marc will present a series of prints from his photobook 90s Archive: Volume Two of American youth. The book tells the stories of young men, skaters and surfers he met in the mid-90s on the south New Jersey shore. The book is held in the collections of Tate Britain, the Martin Parr Foundation and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris.

“After my first year at art school in London in the mid 90s, I landed a summer job teaching photography at an arts camp in south New Jersey. This was my first time in America and I was visually blown away. In my spare time and days off, I made pictures away from the camp. Processing the film in the darkroom (which was a converted chicken coop) and printing contact sheets and prints to take back home to London.“HERO, 2023.

“The beach was regulated at night. Marc remembers driving to the shore with a friend after dark. They laid down together in the sand, side by side. Gazing at the stars (no camera), drinking liquor, a moment of infinite possibilities. Tracing the constellations, an intrusive torch destroyed the moment in a heartbeat. They were cleared from the water’s edge by the local police.”90s Archive: Volume Two.

The book and signed prints will be available to buy from the gallery.
